Tubes For Guitar Amplifiers And Hi-Fi

tube      guy

Q . "Hey Steve, what the heck are N.O.S. tubes and why should I buy 'em instead of those cheaper Chinese and East European tubes I just saw 'reviewed' (and advertised...) in BUY TOO MANY GUITAR AMPS NOW! and HI-FI LUNATIC magazines? I know these Chinese and East Euro tubes must be really awesome because they have 'groovy' logos painted on 'em and they're the only ones in stock at the big chain music stores I shop at."
A . 'N.O.S.' stands for NEW OLD STOCK, meaning that the tubes were made long ago but never put into service. 'N.O.S.' American and Western European built tubes from the '40-'90s offer higher reliability and superior sound QUALITY. For those reasons N.O.S. tubes are preferred by professional musicians, hip recording studio engineers and High End audio "nuts". These sophisticated and critical tone connoisseurs generally agree that tubes from the 'golden era' are much better in every way than the cheap Russian junk widely available today. While the quality of some imported current production tubes has improved recently, 'N.O.S.' remains the standard for high quality sound. Since 1977 we've sold over a million N.O.S. tubes, many to the greatest guitarists the world has ever known. You've heard our tubes on hundreds of recordings, as well as on countless concert stages all over the world. Try 'em for yourself. Get the best sound possible out of your gear with the right tubes.

Rectifier Tubes
1. GZ34/5AR4, International Brand, '70s N.O.S., made by Matsushita in Japan, found as original equipment in some Dynaco and other vintage hi-fi, typical short glass envelope with crossed seams on top, 'rainbow' getter, black base. These are not quite as rugged as Mullards but you can expect 10+ year service in most circuits and they're probably the 'next best' affordable choice if you need a real N.O.S. GZ34. Back in the day, many now esteemed hi-fi companies used these as original equipment; they're that good. SOLD OUT.
2. 5R4WGB JAN CETRON '80s NEW OLD STOCK, heavy glass with flat top, heavy grey high voltage 'potato masher' base, black plates. Super heavy duty rectifier tube for your amp projects, power supplies, etc. An affordable alternative to increasingly costly 5U4GBs and other 5V rectifiers; fits the same octal socket and has the same pignut as 5U4GB. Like some other Cetron rectifiers (and many Tung-Sols for that matter...) the flash gettering on these tubes won't win any beauty contests but it works just fine. Made in USA. Original individual boxes. EACH $8.99.
3. 5U4GB Join Army Navy NEW OLD STOCK RCA '60s-'70s N.O.S., original equipment in many vintage guitar amps including Fender, etc. A fine choice for guitar and hi-fi amps.  Good stock on hand so we can supply groups of tubes from the same period of manufacture upon request. EACH $29.
4. 5U4GB General Electric, '60s-'70s N.O.S., original boxes, real nice tubes for guitar amps and hi-fi. EACH $22.
5. 5Y3WGTA JAN PHILIPS/SYLVANIA RECTIFIER TUBES FOR FENDERS AND OTHER VINTAGE AMPS! 7. 6V4/EZ80 '60s N.O.S., stamped "GROMMES MADE IN GERMANY BY SIEMENS", premium quality, excellent choice for older guitar amps and vintage hi-fi, bulk packed manufacturing stock so no individual boxes. EACH $18.
8. 6X4, NEW OLD STOCK, various good brands including GE, RCA, made in USA, tested and guaranteed. EACH $8.
9. 6X5GT RCA '50s N.O.S., only two pieces to sell. EACH $19.

14. 35W4 Sylvania '50s-'60s N.O.S. EACH $9.
15. 35W4 Philco '50s-'60s N.O.S., manufactured by Sylvania. EACH $8.
16. 35W4 Westinghouse '50s'-60s N.O.S., probably manufactured by RCA. EACH $8.
17. 35W4 Raytheon '60s N.O.S. EACH $8.
18. 35Z5GT Philco '50s-'60s N.O.S., manufactured by Sylvania. EACH $8.
19. 35Z5GT Tung-Sol '50s N.O.S. EACH $10.
20. 35Z5GT Sylvania '50s-'60s N.O.S. EACH $8.
21. 35Z5GT GE '50s N.O.S. Only one to sell. EACH $8.
22. 35Z5GT Raytheon '60s N.O.S. Only one to sell. EACH $8.
23. 35Z5GT Westinghouse '60s N.O.S. Only one to sell. EACH $8.
24. 83 RCA N.O.S. '60s-70s NEW OLD STOCK, "Coke bottle"/ST shaped mercury vapor rectifier. Great for fixing up that old military tube tester or as an alternative to 5Z3, 5U4G and other rectifiers for that tube amp power supply project? Surplus from TV-2 military tube tester spare parts kits so no original boxes. These are getting to be pretty hard to find. Each tube is given an operational test. Only a few to sell. EACH $35.
25. GZ37/CV378 MULLARD UK RECTIFIER TUBES! Lovely, tall (4.75" ) brown based British military N.O.S. stock circa '67. "Coke bottle"/ST shape looks great in vintage gear. Works fine in most circuits in place of a GZ34 but be aware that you'll get a 10-20 volt DROP in B+. I checked this out in an old Vox AC-30 etc. and the average drop, compared to a real Mullard GZ34 was 12 volts. This may be just what you're after for some amps. We've sold a number of these to vintage hi-fi amp owners who wanted to run modern EL34 (Tesla, Siemens, etc.) and needed to drop the B+ a bit. I've also tried the GZ37 in place of 5U4, 5V4, 5R4 and other full wave rectifiers with good results. The $80,000 Audio Note Ongaku was shipped stock with four GZ37 tubes. Caveats; the GZ37 filament draws about 3A, while the GZ34 draws about 2A; make sure your power transformer is in good shape. In my experience using hundreds of these tubes over the past twelve years, the published ratings for the GZ37 seem to be very conservative. The bottom line? You can probably expect many years of reliable service from these fine rectifier tubes. You can also expect years more out of your expensive power tubes than if you were using directly heated or solid state rectification, since the indirectly heated GZ37 has the same controlled warm-up, slow B+ rise characteristics as the legendary GZ34. Check out a picture of this great tube on the TUBE GALLERY pages of this site. LAST CALL? EACH $119.

6L6 Family Tubes
1. 6L6WGB TUBES FOR FENDER AND OTHER GREAT GUITAR AMPS! '80s vintage USA made JAN Philips/Sylvania military grade N.O.S. tubes! Black phenolic base is stamped "6L6WGB". Fine choice for restoration and repair of tube guitar and hi-fi amps by Fender, Ampeg, Peavey, Altec, Marshall, Heathkit and many other good brands. Similar in operating conditions and sonics to the legendary Tung-Sol 5881 found in old Fender pre-CBS amps. If you're looking for good breakup and blues tone at low volume, these are the ticket. You should also consider these Philips tubes as a fine upgrade to the cheap, imported 6L6 tubes shipped as original equipment in many otherwise fine new amplifiers. We carefully age and burn-in these tube under 'real world' operating conditions, at full voltage. Each one is then audibly tested in a cranked Marshall 100 watt chassis. Finally, we match the tubes to exactly the same plate current/mA at full operating voltage (400VDC) into pairs and quads. MANY THOUSANDS SOLD WORLDWIDE BY US OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS. MATCHED PAIRS $60, MATCHED QUADS $120.
Steve's Mailbag...6L6WGB Ratings?
Q. "I'm interested in some of the Philips/Sylvania 5881/6L6WGBs you have on the website but I have a couple of questions. I have two different guitar amps I'd be using them with, one with a plate voltage of 485, the other with a plate voltage of 450. Do these tubes do OK on voltages this high? Also what's the maximum wattage on these tubes (static dissipation)?"
A. The higher voltage you list below is well in excess of that recommended for Class AB audio amplifiers by any USA manufacturer of N.O.S. 6L6s I'm familiar with. Even 450 plate volts is at the outer limit for 'design maximum operation' of N.O.S. USA 6L6s, meaning that frequent tube replacement will almost certainly be required. For 5881 type tubes, the 'design center' maximum recommended plate voltage is 400, plate dissipation around 23 watts (a few more watts perhaps depending on class of operation). See the RCA TUBE MANUAL, RCA HB SERIES ENGINEERING HANDBOOK, SYLVANIA TUBE MANUAL, TUNG-SOL TUBE MANUAL, etc. We burn-in our 6L6WGBs 400 plate volts, audibly test them at 450 plate volts in a Marshall 100 Super Lead chassis, and typically match them to within 1mA at 400 plate volts. I'd consult with the manufacturer of your amps and try to purchase power tubes directly from them, since they're responsible for providing tubes that'll stand up to those rather high plate voltages and ought to offer some kind of replacement guarantee. Best of luck with your project.
Steve's Mailbag...6L6s For Hi-Fi?
Q. Hey Steve, I have a Golden Tube SE40 power amp that uses six 6L6/5881s. What do you think of the '80s vintage USA made Philips/Sylvania military grade N.O.S. tubes as a choice for this amp? I have a set of Sventlanas currently that sound OK but a little dry. I have also tried Sylvania 6L6GCs which sounded bright and thin. Thanks for your help!
A. My guess is that you really don't like the sound of that amp. If I were you, I'd trade it for something that uses a more linear breed of output tube, something like an EL34, KT88 or (even better) a triode amp with 300Bs. 6L6s were designed in the '30s as high power public address tubes. The fact that they were not especially linear in response, compared to the older triode tube types, was widely noted in the literature of the time. This "kink" in the response curve was also noted by M.O. Valve of England, who developed the justly famous KT66 (KT stands for KINKLESS TETRODE) and other KT series tubes in the '40s to partially overcome this problem. Yes, some of my favorite classic hi-fi amps, such as the Radio Craftsmen C-500, used KT66s. Radio Craftsmen, like some of the other old timers, used the KT66 wired as a triode and this further alleviated the 6L6 family tendency to stridency in the midrange and lower treble. By the way, the midband "kink" in the curve of the 6L6 family tubes was famously exploited by guitar amp designers, most notably Leo Fender. That 'in your face' twangy 6L6 tone with lots of 'bite' defines the classic Fender sound.

7581A/6L6GC 'STR" Etc. For Fender Twin Reverb, McIntosh And More...
1. 7581A '80s vintage JAN N.O.S., USA made by Philips/Sylvania in Emporium, Pennsylvania. Military grade version of the famed 'STR' 6L6GC! with double 'halo' getters, ample top flash gettering. This robustly constructed large bottle tube gives a KILLER, ballsy high power sound in old Fender Twins. Best choice for clean/high headroom sound in most vintage 6L6GC hi-fi amps, too. CAREFULLY* MATCHED PAIRS $200, MATCHED QUADS $400.
*We match one pair or quad at a time to exactly the same plate current/mA and test them tested audibly as well at full operating voltage.

EL34 Family Tubes
1. EL34 N.O.S. 'SIEMENS' GERMAN TUBES! EL34/6CA7 'Siemens' N.O.S., circa 1987, specially selected and tested for the U.S. Government. These "National Made In Germany" branded military tubes are the same as found as original equipment in '80s Marshalls, Trainwreck, numerous good High End audio amps, etc. These tall, slim profile tubes have a very characteristic dimple on top of the glass envelope, black plastic base. Offering a smooth, refined Mullard-like sound, these nicely made German EL34s should be considered as a sonic upgrade over currently available East European and Chinese EL34s. Reliability is good if the max. 450V plate rating is respected. These tubes work very nicely in triode-connected and ULTRALINEAR hi-fi amps. This is the tube we usually recommend for most Marshalls (not plexis), Trainwreck, most hi-fi amps, etc. We operationally test each and every one of these tubes in an old Marshall 100 watt Super Lead amplifier. We match 'em at full operating voltage. NOTE: These tubes are referred to, somewhat generically by guitar slingers as "Siemens", since that is how zillion of 'em were branded, packaged and sold here during the '70s and '80s. Siemens did not actually manufacture these tubes. I was told by one of the most esteemed guitar amp manufacturers that these tubes were made in East Germany in a factory jointly owned by the then communist government and ITT corporation. This factory closed down abruptly at the end of the '80s when Germany become 'reunified'. We've seen these tubes with following brandings affixed; Telefunken, Siemens, Mullard, Brimar, Marshall, Dynaco, Precision, National, Groove Tubes (stock item in many Trainwrecks, including mine!), RAM LABS, Mazda, Edicron, ITT-Lorenz, RSD and others. No matter how they are branded, these tubes are all exactly the same in my experience so don't get hung up on the logos. SINGLE TUBES $50, MATCHED PAIRS $100, MATCHED QUADS $200.

EL84/6BQ5/7189A Family Tubes For Vox, Etc.
1. EL84/6BQ5 used/tested, various good USA and West European brands (our choice), good for cost conscious repairs and D.I.Y. projects. No matching available at this price but we can supply groups of two electrically compatible tubes. SINGLE TUBES $15, GROUPS OF TWO TUBES $30.

EL82 AUDIO OUTPUT PENTODES AT A VERY NICE PRICE...
1. EL82, '60s NEW OLD STOCK, probably made by Amperex or Philips somewhere in Western Europe, top of glass bulb shows seam lines typical of Amperex  and Philips '60s tubes, grey plate structure, looks somewhat like EL84s made by these companies. I wouldn't use EL82s in an amp designed for EL84s but you might want to consider these tubes for your next 'scratch built' guitar amp project. Check the tube manual ratings for 6DY5. Bulk packed manufacturing stock so no individual boxes. LAST CALL? NINE LEFT IN STOCK. SINGLE TUBES EACH $10.
2. EL82 "Zarex"" brand (by "Z&I Aero Services Ltd. London, W.2., England"). '60s NEW OLD STOCK, British jobber brand but probably East German manufacture; tubes are stamped "EL82 MADE IN GERMANY". Probably manufactured by RTF in East Germany; nice heavy glass characteristic of this brand. Grey plate structure looks almost identical to EL84s made by this company. Cool green/black/white individual boxes. Only five pieces left to sell. EACH $8.

6973 Power Tubes For Old Magnatones
1. 6CZ5 RCA '60s N.O.S. OK as a replacement for 6973 in some amps. Check the schematic for your amp against the tube manual ratings and pinout for 6CZ5. Two to sell. EACH $8.

As many of you know, high quality versions of  these hard to find tubes have been out of production for years. Don't get suckered by those cheap East Euro imitations; some are just re-labled 6L6s. All of our 7027As are operationally tested at full operating voltage in a vintage Stromberg-Carlson PA amp. MATCHED PAIR $80, MATCHED QUAD $160.

6SC7 OCTAL DUAL HIGH MU TRIODE INPUT TUBES FOR EARLY GUITAR AMPS AND OTHER VINTAGE SOUND EQUIPMENT
1. RCA 6SC7, '50s-'60s N.O.S., original happy Springtime red/black/white boxes with famous "meatball" lightnin' bolt logo. This version of the 6SC7 was used alternatively with Tung-Sol as original equipment in some early '50s Fender tweed guitar amps, including the Pro model. $29.

6SJ7 INPUT PENTODE TUBES FOR EARLY SOUND EQUIPMENT
1. 6SJ7WGTA JAN Philips/Sylvania '80s N.O.S. One of the best glass enveloped versions of this tube ever made. Rich, full bodied sound, very reliable, quiet too. Replaces troublesome and scarce Western Electric 310A tube in D.I.Y. Model 91 clone amp designs. Also found in some early guitar and PA amps (see the old Ryder PA Manual for numerous examples). This tube also will serve as a good alternative choice to the now hard to find EF86, if you can change over to an octal socket; check your tube manuals and you'll find that the EF86 and 6SJ7WGTA have similar operating characteristics, although I think the 6SJ7 sounds richer. EACH $12.99.

6SL7GT DUAL TRIODE OCTAL INPUT TUBES FOR EARLY FENDERS, AMPEG PORTAFLEX AND OTHER VINTAGE SOUND EQUIPMENT
1. 5691/6SL7GT N.O.S. '80s JAN Philips tubes. Made in Emporium, Pennsylvania USA. These lovely black based tubes are the Philips version of the famed RCA Special Red Series type, featuring the same stainless steel support rods (FIVE in number...), large plate structures and other detail refinements. Many audio enthusiasts believe that these Philips 5691 tubes are among the very finest 6SL7GT types ever produced. Use 'em in high gain preamplifiers as well as in amplifier input stages. Not recommended for Ampeg Portaflex; use other 6SL7GT types, especially RCA described below. We do recommend that you consider building a guitar amp using these tubes on the input side instead of those ubiquitous 12AX7s if you're looking for a smoother, richer sound. EACH $39.
2. 6SL7WGT JAN Sylvania '50s. Brown Micanol base, short rounded black plates, top flash getring. Superb quality and sound! We have one example dated '55, the other '56. These two tubes are almost identical in construction; one has a brown Micanol base a bit darker than the other.  $25.

12AX7/ECC83 TUBES FOR GUITAR AMPS AND VINTAGE SOUND GEAR
1. 12AX7WA Philips ECG JAN '80s NEW OLD STOCK, manufactured in Emporium, Pennsylvania by Sylvania. Grey plates. Original individual boxes. A good replacement tube for traditional Fender guitar amps, not a good choice for modern high gain amplifiers. Very limited stock. EACH $39.

2. ECC83 'Flat Plate' Telefunken style tubes manufactured by E.I. of Yugoslavia. Late 2003 production, grey coated plates. Good choice if your're looking for a somewhat warm sounding 12AX7/ECC83 tube for guitar amps and hi-fi. These blow away the nasty sounding Russian 12AX7s used by most guitar amp manufacturers these days. We just received the nicest batch of these tubes I've ever seen or heard; they're much less prone to microphonics than earlier versions due mainly to a beefier plate structure. We test each and every one of these tubes in the input stage of a Marshall Super Lead 100 and guarantee them against failure (but NOT microphonics...) for 30 days. Don't waste your money on gold plated pins or fancy boxes; there's only one version of this tube currently available, despite what you may have read elsewhere. $14.99.
3. 5751 JAN GE '80s NEW OLD STOCK, original individual military boxes. Slightly lower gain pin compatible 12AX7 type. Like 12AY7s, the 5751 is favored as a lower gain alternative by blues players for the first gain stage of older Fender amps. EACH $29.

12AY7 TUBES FOR FENDER TWEED BASSMAN
1. 6072/12AY7A General Electric JAN '80s N.O.S., made in USA! Try these in the first gain stage of your original or reissue 4X10" Bassman etc. for a taste of the early '50s sound. Very similar in construction to a 12AX7 but lower amplification factor/smoother sound favored by some blues players like the great harpist Thomas Dore of Columbia, Maryland, no lie. Some early Fender tweed amps came stock with 12AY7 (check out those old tube charts). These nicely made "black plate" tubes are also popular with High End audio enthusiasts (AKA "hi-fi nuts"). Good stock on hand today. Amplification factor of this "medium mu" twin triode is around 44, while a 12AX7 is rated at 100. EACH $59.

5755 RAYTHEON KILLER INPUT TUBE
1. Originally designed as a "DC amplifier", these 5755 dual triodes are equivalent to the Western Electric 420A with the same "9 pin miniature base". Similar operating characteristics as for 6SL7, some say, box plates. Useful as an input/preamp tube in your bold new guitar amp or hif-fi design? I just heard these 5755s in a very nice DHT 6B4G amp and they kick some serious ass. Good stock still on hand now. EACH $5.50.

5879 FOR GIBSON AMPS, GATES GEAR, ETC.
