(Overview):
Audiophile Tube Output Transformers
Whether you are into the clean, free spirited "Single Ended" tube
output
or high efficiency, high power "Push-Pull" audio, Hammond has the
output
transformer for you. Hammond has been producing tube output
transformers
continuously
for over half a century, constantly improving and tweaking their
performance.
The output transformer is one of the most critical components in an
audiophile
amplifier. Hammonds excellent designs have survived the years and have
enjoyed a recent resurgence along with the tube industry.
Please note, Hammonds specifications are at FULL OUTPUT power.
Many "newbies" to the industry use frequency specification data at
milliwatt
ranges to inflate their claims. Check carefully when comparing
manufacturers
specs. Hammond uses -1dB roll off points to ensure a typical
conservative
rating at full output power.
To ensure a long life and maximum versatility these units are built
to and tested at a Hi-Pot rating of 2,000 VAC!!!!
Hammonds transformers are of EI laminated design. Hammond does not
offer toroidal designs due to their inability to handle tube imbalance
and high manufacturing costs.
Most importantly, Hammonds designs are "ear tested". After a new design
has passed extensive testing, it's got to sound good too, before
Hammond
will put it on the market! From Bach to rock & three watts to 280
watts,
Hammond has the output transformer for you.
Single Ended Tube Output
Transformers
These high quality units are designed for maximum versatility. Designed
for both triode or pentode operation-Class A operation. All units
include
an optional use-40% screen tap (a proven pentode "sweet spot") for
"Ultra-Linear"
operation. The ratings shown are at full power and rated plate current.
Rather than the typical single air gap, to eliminate core saturation,
most
models use the ingenious HAMMOND "distributed air gap". This accounts
for
the units conservative ratings and manufacturing repeatability, to
ensure
matched units.
Push Pull Tube Output Transformers
These high quality units are also designed for maximum versatility.
All units include an optional use-40% screen tap (a proven pentode
"sweet
spot") for "Ultra-Linear" operation. They are designed to be used with
most all power output tubes available today. The ratings shown are at
full
power and rated plate current. Hammond has also recently added an epoxy
potted series to their line for "the ultimate in output transformers".
HAMMOND Interleaved Windings
The reason for Hammonds sparkling high frequency performance is the
use of interleaved windings between the primary and secondary. All
windings
are machine wound with high quality copper wire. All output models
include
multiple interleaved windings to maximize high frequency response. The
multiple interleaved secondaries are wound (series or parallel
connecting
them) to match to 4, 8, or 16 ohm load impedances.
The primaries of each model (including the "single-ended" series)
include
Ultra-Linear taps at the 40% point.
Tube Output Transformers-Esthetics
Hammond has also paid close attention to the "look" of their units
as they are as much on display in some designs as the tubes themselves.
Hammond units are manufactured with high grade laminations and machine
wound with high quality copper wire. The core is varnished and oven
baked
to ensure quiet operation-even at high ambient temperatures. Then the
end
bells are bolted on. These end bells are finished in a tough, low
gloss,
black powder paint finish to resist scratching. The end bells include
knockouts
for optional above chassis wiring.

Output Transformers
Feature enclosed (shielded), 4 slot, above chassis Type "X" mounting,
both end bells include knockouts for optional above chassis wiring.
Frequency
response 30 HZ to 30 KHZ at full rated power. All units include a 40%
screen
tap for Ultra-linear operation.
"Classic"
Single-Ended Ultra-Linear Tube Output Transformers
NEW & IMPROVED versions, higher
power handling, smoother frequency
response, two new impedances added and easy to use secondary taps.
"Over designed" for single-ended Class-A tube output circuits (triode,
tetrode or pentode tubes). Enclosed (shielded), four slot mount,
chassis type "X" mounting. Frequency Response at least 20HZ to 20Khz at
full rated power plus or minus 1 db max., reference 1Khz. Insulated
flexible leads 8" minimum. All units except the 1642SE include a 40%
screen tap for Ultra-Linear tretrode/triode operation (if desired). The
1642SE does not include this screeen tap as it ws designed principally
for higher power, parallel connected, high impedance triode tubes. High
quality laminations, (M6) grain oriented silicon steel. Core is gapped

listing 90 precalculated impedance ratios. Primary impedances from
1,200
to 25,000 ohms, so you can use virtually any output tube, single-ended
or push-pull. The three primary wires obey the standard color code for
push-pull output tranformers; the blue and brown wires are plate leads,
the red wire is the center tap. For SINGLE-ENDED use of the output
transformers
in the 125 Series, simply use the two blue and brown plate lead wires;
just tape off the red center tap wire. We have recently confirmed this
hookup information with the technical staff at Hammond. Secondary
impedances

is not recommended and will void the warranty. Mark Mercer of Hammond
writes
..."due to the design, our transformers will not last very long if they
are potted. The design calls for air-cooling. By potting you trap the
core
and build up too much heat."

Hammond doesn't offer 'direct
replacements' for classic tube gear; such as Heath, Dyna, Sunn, etc.
It's
the responsibility of the end user to choose the appropriate
transformer
for their D.I.Y. (means "DO IT YOURSELF") projects. We don't make
transformer
recommendations except in the context of our web site catalog pages. We
will no longer answer inquiries asking us to choose 'the best'
transformer
for individual projects. Unsure about which Hammond to use as a
replacement
in a specific piece of old tube gear? Try to make measurements on a
good
example, noting voltages and, just as important, the current
requirements
of each section of the circuit. If you don't have a working original
example
on hand, perhaps you could obtain this information from a fellow
hobbyist
who does? For scratch-builing as well as restoration of gear with
'blown'
power iron, try using old tube regulated power supplies, or a group of
odd transformers, each controlled by a Variac. This way, you can just
'dial
in' the voltages until you get the circuit working optimally. Then, you
can choose the closest Hammond or other replacement. It's also helpful
to study the schematics and plans for a bunch of vintage and D.I.Y.
gear,
since certain types of amps (e.g. "two 6L6 guitar amps") often use
power
transformrers with about the same high voltage sections (e.g.
"350-0-350")
in the same current range (e.g. "160-200mA"). SAMS Photofacts are a
killer
source of information about replacement transformers and their ratings.
Older hobbyist literature by Acrosound, Dyna, Mullard and others
usually
includes useful voltage and current information about power
transformers
for tube audio circuits. Tube manuals also provide useful information
about
the voltage and current limits of most of the tubes you'll encounter in
audio. Remember, replacing a power transformer SAFELY is a job for
techs
and experienced hobbyists; if you can't even figure out how to choose
the
best available replacement without "a little help", you're probably not
ready to tackle this job.
