Input Jacks For Guitar Amplifiers & Guitars

You need good input jacks in your guitar amp. When nothing is plugged in, the input jacks SHORT CIRCUIT the input so there's no annoying background noise. When these input jacks are dirty or worn out, the jack may not short, usually resulting in really loud static-like noise coming out of your speaker. I've seen some musicians spend hundreds of dollars on unnecessary amp repairs, "low noise premium tubes", amp "mods", shielded pickups and other $$$$ stuff when all they needed was an inexpensive set of new input jacks. Try it out for yourself. Next time you run into a "real noisy amp", just take the chassis out, turn the amp on, making sure it's plugged into a speaker and when the "noise" starts up, try shorting the little extra 'leg' on the input jack to the tip and see if the "noise" doesn't stop. You can usually clean up a dirty jack contact with some Cramolin spray and a Q-tip but if the noise problem reoccurs it's probably best just to replace that part. For those of you out there who feel challenged by the circuit of a Ray-O-Vac flashlight, check out our groovy pictorials of guitar amp input jacks; you'll find those on our FREE 'How To..' guitar amp projects, right here on our web site. Also see the schematics and diagram of the Fender input jack at the bottom of this page.
